The Waterway
The noise, distant at first, grew louder and deeper.
A bright Iight approached slowly, growing larger and brighter, glistening on the watery passageway and the rain-splattered window-pane through which I observed.
The noise, now a continuous throbbing like an overladened heart beating furiously, induced an excited fear.
Could it be a dragon, breathing fire, or a monstrous mythical creature? Closer now, cutting the water, lights reflecting and shimmering in the ripples.
Finally alongside, long and dark, passing by slowly, not seeing me here, invisible.
Lights dimmed, as the bridge swallowed the barge passing into the distance.
Silence returned.
